FAQ
1. How strict are the ticket checks on trains and metros?
Pretty strict. On regional trains and the Paris Metro, inspectors appear randomly.
If you don’t validate your ticket or you “forgot” to buy one… fines are instant.
2. Do I need to book attractions in advance?
For big-ticket spots like the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Versailles, Disneyland, yes — especially in summer.
Walk-ins often wait 1–3 hours or get turned away completely during peak dates.
3. What should I wear to blend in and not look “too touristy”?
French style = simple, neutral, clean.
Avoid neon, giant backpacks, and flip-flops in Paris (locals save those for beaches).
A basic outfit can magically unlock better treatment.
4. Can I drink alcohol in public?
It depends on the city.
In Paris, it’s common to drink wine by the Seine or Canal Saint-Martin.
Some cities (Nice, Cannes, Strasbourg) have time-restricted rules or bans in certain areas. Always check local signs.
5. Is tipping required?
No — service is already included.
But leaving €1–2 or rounding up is appreciated.
For nightlife: tipping bartenders is normal in tourist bars but not expected in local cafés.
6. Can I get around France easily if I’m vegan/vegetarian?
Paris, Lyon, and Bordeaux have plenty of veggie/vegan restaurants.
Traditional French cuisine is very meat-heavy, but supermarkets have good vegan options.
